The aim of the Impala project is to consolidate the software development effort in the context of our image and video search engine.

Quote from the MediaMill website:

• The MediaMill semantic video search engine is bridging the gap between research and applications. It integrates the state-of-the-art techniques developed at the Intelligent Systems Lab Amsterdam of the University of Amsterdam and applies it to realistic problems in video indexing.

Basically, Impala is the software infrastructure that indexes an image or a video collection in order for the user to be able to search/browse that collection more effectively.
